Hypothesis: Many people in the world do not believe people need psychiatry.  An enormous amount of people think the patients should just deal with their own problems.  Others waver on the decision of getting a psychiatrist because they do not understand how someone can empathize with them.  So my hypothesis is people whose ages range from 14-55 feel psychiatry is important to the patient.

Context: My target audience for this survey had the ages of at least 14 to 55.  I chose this age group because you can take psychiatry at any age.  Also I felt these are the ages of people that take psychiatry the most.  I feel my results are reliable and valid because my questions were questions that anybody could answer.  Also I asked people in all the age groups that I provided.  After I did my first survey experiment I went back and added another question.  The question I added was what age group people were in.  The age groups were 14-19, 20-25, 26-31, 32-37, 38-43, 44-49, and 50-55.  I asked this question because I felt it would give me more information on what people in different age groups suffer from.

Results: Have You Ever Had a Psychiatrist?

Data Analysis: As you can see by the graph majority of the people that I asked the survey have not had a psychiatrist.  The ratio is 4:17 which is more than half of the total number of people that took the survey.  A trend that I found was in the age group of 14-19.  Most of the people in this age group have not had a psychiatrist.  Something else I found is in question 9.  Question 9 asked on a scale of 1-10 how important do you think psychiatry is to the patient.  Two people answered 1.  One person answered 5.  Two people answered 6.  Four people answered 7.  Five people answered 8.  Two people answered 9.  Five people answered 10.  Another trend I found interesting was with the question would you prefer a female or male psychiatrist.  Three people said they would prefer a male psychiatrist.  Eleven people said it doesn’t matter if they have a male or female psychiatrist.  Eight people said they would prefer a female over a male psychiatrist.

Conclusion: With all the data that I collected I found that I was right with my hypothesis.  I was right because I said that people felt that psychiatry was important to the patient.  Majority of the people that took my survey circled over 5 for the question on a scale of 1-10 how important do you think psychiatry to the patient.  The two numbers that were circled the most were 8 and 10.  Both of these numbers were circled by five people each.  I can conclude from my survey that people feel that psychiatry is really important to the patient.

Follow Up: In my first research memo I wanted to see how the data I achieved varied in different age groups.  In my second research memo I would like to see how the data varies in different genders.  I also would like to know what activities help people out when they are stressed.  Since I would like to find this out I have made 5 essential questions.  My first question is, what activities people do when they are stressed.  Is there a certain activity that seems to help people that are stressed the most?  How does psychiatry help the patient?  Why do patients that have a psychiatrist feel they need one?  My last question is how the psychiatrist makes the patient comfortable enough to make them tell them their problem.  I plan on adding a question for my survey. My question is, are you male or female.  Medias for my new section of research will be psychiatrists’ websites and books about psychiatry.
